Themed Workshop 4 (Afternoon session)

GamiForest: The Future of Nature Knowledge, Artistic Expression, and More than Human Forest Interactions

Description: This workshop consists of two parts. The first part is an introduction to the topic through short presentations, and the second part is a playful design activity.

Part 1 is kicked off by a presentation from Dr. Timo Nummenmaa and Dr. Kaisa Liimatainen on the results of the Research Council of Finland-funded GamiLiDAR project on gamified LiDAR scanning for forestry applications, and on how this work continues. This is followed by invited workshop participant presentations on related topics, and the session concludes with a presentation on More than Human Forest Interactions with robots by Philip Chambers.

Authors who wish to give a short presentation on a related topic are invited to directly contact the Workshop Chair, Dr. Timo Nummenmaa (timo.nummenmaa@tuni.fi). This can be unique to the workshop or something you already present in another form at the conference (a demo, poster, WiP), and you wish to give a short talk about the topic. If it is something new, please also submit a workshop note abstract through EasyChair.

Part 2 is a structured brainstorming session that uses playful methods to ideate solutions for monitoring and communicating details of nature locations (e.g., geological history or forest data) using artistic solutions, more than human forest interactions and gameful forest interactions. The idea is to concentrate on future possibilities within the topics (1-15 years in the future) and to develop fresh and unique concepts where, e.g., robots are incorporated in forest activities, artistic expression is used for communication or data collection and visualisation, and new technology is employed in gameful forest interactions. The results of the workshop will be used to inform future possibilities in multidisciplinary collaboration regarding art, technology, and sustainable tourism, as well as possible use cases for more than human forest interactions. The results will be disseminated through presentations and research publications.

The workshop contributes to the Research Council of Finland-funded UNITE Flagship and European Social Fund Plus-funded Taide, teknologia ja kestävä matkailu.

Chairs: Dr. Timo Nummenmaa (timo.nummenmaa@tuni.fi; main contact), Dr. Kaisa Liimatainen (kaisa.liimatainen@tuni.fi) and Philip Chambers (philip.chambers@uef.fi)
